Rocking horse, push car or balance bike?
2026.06.30 · Playkids Editorial

A baby's very first ride-on is a milestone — but with rockers, push cars and balance bikes all promising the same smiles, which one actually fits your child right now? The short answer: it depends on where they are in their development, not just their age.
From around 12 months, a rocking horse is usually the gentlest place to start. Rocking is a seated, low-risk motion that builds core strength and a sense of rhythm, and a weighted base means there's no tipping even when they get enthusiastic. Look for rounded runners and a padded seat.
Once your little one is confidently walking — often 15 to 24 months — a push car or foot-to-floor ride-on comes into its own. These reward that new-found mobility with a sense of independence, and the wide wheelbase keeps things stable on turns.
The balance bike is the graduation step, typically from 18 months to 3 years. With no pedals to overthink, children learn the single hardest cycling skill — balance — naturally. Kids who master a balance bike almost always skip stabilisers entirely.
Whatever stage you're at, the safety basics are the same: smooth edges, a low centre of gravity, and a weight rating that comfortably covers your child. Every Playkids ride-on is export-tested to EN71 and ASTM standards before it ships.
